The Installation and the radiation protection of the optically stimulated luminescence reader with sealed beta source in the Toki Research Institute of Isotope Geology and Geochronology, Japan Atomic Energy Agency

Tokuyasu, Kayoko; Furuta, Sadaaki*; Kokubu, Yoko; Umeda, Koji

Nihon Hoshasen Anzen Kanri Gakkai-Shi, 15(1), p.80 - 87, 2016/07

An optically stimulated luminescence reader (Riso TL/OSL DA-20) was installed in Toki Research Institute of Isotope Geology and Geochronology (Toki-shi, Gifu Prefecture), Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) for dating the geological sample. An accumulated dose of the sample is obtained using the reader. Sealed beta source of strontium-90 is required to be mounted on the reader because repeated artificial irradiation is necessary for the accumulated dose estimation. However, there are not many introduction examples for the reader domestically, and the information as to radiation control of the reader is limited. We therefore report here the process of source loading on the reader and radiation control associated with the use of the source.

Optically Stimulated Luminescence, OSL, dosimeters have been used as individual dosimeters for external radiation in Nuclear Science Research Institute and so on since October, 2014 as successor of the RPL glass dosimeters. Characteristics of the OSL dosimeters such as dose linearity, energy response, angular dependence, fading characteristics and responses at mixed irradiation fields were examined prior to the start of use. As a result, it was found that the OSL dosimeters met the performances that the national standard (JIS Z 4339) determined. The characteristics of OSL dosimeters were comparable with those of the RPL glass dosimeters. In conclusion, it was confirmed the OSL dosimeters had sufficient performances for the practical use on individual monitoring. This report shows the testing methods and the results for the characteristics of OSL dosimeters.

The 6-methyl- 2-(2-pyridyl)-benzimidazole (biz) ligand coordinates with the actinide species in solution, and the complexes display efficient intra-molecular energy-transfer processes. The energy transfer in the Cm(III):biz system proceeds in a non-radiative mode, whereas a radiative mode is the principal mechanism in the Am(III)-biz system.

A SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Eu$$^{2+}$$ storage phosphor for neutron imaging

Sakasai, Kaoru; Katagiri, Masaki; To, Kentaro; Takahashi, Hiroyuki*; Nakazawa, Masaharu*; Kondo, Yasuhiro*

Applied Physics A, 74(Suppl.1), p.S1589 - S1591, 2002/12

Times Cited Count:30 Percentile:71.77(Materials Science, Multidisciplinary)

A phosphor material such as SrBPO$$_{5}$$:Eu$$^{2+}$$ has been investigated for two-dimensional imaging for pulsed-neutron source. The authors found this phosphor itself shows photostimulated luminescence (PSL) by illumination of 635 nm laser light after neutron irradiation without adding any neutron sensitive materials such as Gd. The PSL intensity per neutron flux was proportional to E$$^{-0.5}$$, where E is neutron energy. The neutron sensitivity was increased by using enriched boron instead of natural boron. The S$$_{gamma}$$/S$$_{n}$$ ratio of this phosphor using enriched boron was better than that of a commercially available imaging plate, where S$$_{gamma}$$ and S$$_{n}$$ are gamma and neutron sensitivities, respectively.
